MSF urges global fund to keep North Kivu malaria fight alive

As funding faces potential reduction, Médecins Sans Frontières warns the healthcare crisis in North Kivu could intensify. The region has long struggled with humanitarian emergencies and supply chain disruptions that severely strain its healthcare infrastructure.

Stéphane Doyon, MSF France’s Program Manager, explains why this funding shift would be catastrophic for malaria control efforts.

« Our greatest concern is that removing North Kivu from the Global Fund’s project would cut off critical antimalarial treatments supplied through non-MSF health centers. Since MSF cannot replace the Global Fund’s coverage across the entire province, the consequences would be devastating. »

« Malaria remains the leading cause of medical consultations in our facilities. Prioritizing antimalarial support for North Kivu is essential—this province is among the most vulnerable in the country, battling not only malaria but also measles and cholera outbreaks. Years of conflict have left the population in dire need of sustained external assistance. »
