Following the dramatic halt to the recent Ligue 1 clash between FC Nantes and Toulouse, the debate over appropriate sanctions has intensified. Roland Menu, president of the ‘Allez Nantes Canaris’ supporters’ club, shares his outrage at the unacceptable violence that overshadowed the match.
Unacceptable behavior on display
The May 17 encounter between FC Nantes and Toulouse came to an abrupt end due to multiple incidents of fan misconduct. Roland Menu, a lifelong fan of the Canaries with six decades of devotion, expressed his dismay at the events that unfolded on the pitch.
The match was marred by a series of disturbing actions, including field invasions, projectile throwing, and the lighting of smoke bombs. These actions prompted the match referee to abandon the game prematurely.
“A disgrace and cowardly behavior”
Menu firmly condemns the actions that led to the match’s suspension. “This is a disgrace and these individuals are cowards,” he declares. “I’m deeply saddened by what happened. While we’re all frustrated with the team’s current situation, invading the pitch crosses every line of acceptable behavior. We know the consequences these actions will bring.”
Unexpected escalation
The supporters’ club president admits he was aware of potential demonstrations but expected them to occur after the final whistle rather than mid-match. “We anticipated some form of protest, but nothing of this magnitude or intensity,” he explains. “This wasn’t about expressing dissatisfaction—it was outright violence.”
Coach’s reaction mirrors fans’ sentiments
Vahid Halilhodžić’s emotional reaction to the incidents resonates with Menu’s own feelings. The coach’s plea for fans to return to the stands and allow the match to continue was met with understanding by the supporters’ club president. “His response was completely justified. He wanted the game to proceed, especially since it was his final match with the team.”
Potential sanctions loom large
The French Football League will announce its decision regarding sanctions on May 27. Menu expresses concern about potential stadium closures. “The immediate consequence would be playing behind closed doors, which means we might miss two or three home games in August. We’re also worried about point deductions that could cripple our season before it even begins.”
He points to Saint-Étienne’s four-year-old case as a cautionary tale. The recent calls for dissolving the Loire Brigade—a group associated with fan violence—have also entered the conversation. Menu takes a measured approach to this suggestion. “The Loire Brigade isn’t a supporters’ club but a group of individuals. While they contribute to stadium atmosphere, their actions yesterday crossed all boundaries.”
True supporterism defined
For Menu, authentic fandom means supporting the team through both victories and defeats, never resorting to violence. “True supporters encourage their team, regardless of the score. What we witnessed yesterday wasn’t supporting—it was pure vandalism.”
Unwavering loyalty
The 60-year veteran fan vows to continue supporting FC Nantes even if the team faces relegation to Ligue 2. “Our loyalty to FC Nantes is absolute. We’ve weathered good times and bad, dealt with competent and incompetent leadership alike. Through it all, our love for the club remains unchanged.”
