Niger and Turkey deepen ties in ankara with new agreements

Niger and Türkiye have reached a pivotal moment in their bilateral relations following a high-level visit to Ankara by Nigerien President General Abdourahamane Tiani. This marks his first official trip outside Africa since assuming office, underscoring the growing importance of the partnership between the two nations.

During a series of formal discussions at the presidential palace in Ankara, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Tiani formalized key agreements spanning multiple sectors. Among the most significant were a higher education cooperation protocol for 2026–2030, the establishment of a Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO), a framework for managing the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, and a diplomatic cooperation memorandum.

President Erdogan highlighted the shared ambition to expand collaboration across critical areas such as defense, energy, mining, agriculture, trade, and investment. He also announced the creation of a dedicated mechanism aimed at boosting business opportunities between Ankara and Niamey, fostering economic synergy and mutual growth.

Emphasizing Türkiye’s commitment to African security challenges—particularly in the Sahel—Türkiye’s leader reiterated Ankara’s dedication to enhancing military training and intelligence-sharing initiatives with partner nations. He stressed that Türkiye’s approach to Africa is built on mutual respect, equitable partnerships, and tangible benefits for all parties involved.

President Erdogan also highlighted tangible contributions to Niger’s development, including the ongoing operation of the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, multiple irrigation and rural development projects, and educational initiatives led by the Maarif Foundation. He noted that nearly 500 Nigerien students are currently pursuing higher education in Türkiye, a testament to the deepening educational ties between the two countries.

For his part, President Tiani described the relationship as a cornerstone of Niger’s foreign policy. He reflected on the substantial progress made since President Erdogan’s landmark visit to Niger in 2013, praising Türkiye’s sustained support in combating armed groups across the Sahel. Tiani emphasized that this cooperation has played a vital role in strengthening Niger’s security capabilities and regional stability.
