Olympique lyonnais denied request to postpone first ligue 1 match vs toulouse
The Olympique Lyonnais has seen its plea to delay its opening Ligue 1 fixture against Toulouse turned down by the French Professional Football League (LFP). The request was made to avoid scheduling conflicts with potential UEFA Champions League qualifying matches.
Champions League ambitions complicate Ligue 1 start
The Lyon-based club, managed by Paul Fonseca, faces a congested early schedule if they advance through the Champions League qualifiers. Their potential third qualifying round ties could span August 4 or 5 (first leg) and August 11 (second leg). If they progress further, the club would need to accommodate midweek Champions League fixtures between Ligue 1 matches, including a trip to Toulouse on August 22.
This scenario mirrors similar requests from other Ligue 1 clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and RC Strasbourg earlier this year. However, the LFP has maintained its stance against altering the opening day of the league season.
LFP prioritizes Ligue 1 opening weekend
The decision was confirmed during a Monday evening video conference with the LFP’s board of directors. The governing body emphasized its commitment to preserving the integrity of the championship’s opening weekend. Starting from the upcoming season, Ligue 1 matches will be exclusively broadcast on the Ligue 1+ platform, adding further significance to the league’s scheduled debut.
Under the current ruling, the Olympique Lyonnais must navigate their double-header commitments without exceptions, meaning their players will need to adjust to the demanding schedule if European ambitions materialize.
