Popenguine pilgrimage 2026: Prime Minister Sonko meets Dakar archbishop ahead of event

With the 138th edition of the Popenguine Marian pilgrimage just around the corner, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko paid a courtesy call to the Cathedral Notre-Dame des Victoires in Dakar. The high-profile meeting underscored the government’s commitment to fostering social harmony in the lead-up to one of Senegal’s most significant religious gatherings.

The Prime Minister was received by the Archbishop of Dakar, Monseigneur André Guèye, in an atmosphere of mutual respect and warm institutional dialogue. Accompanying him were Marie Rose Faye, the government spokesperson and minister, alongside Béatrice Germaine Faye, a member of parliament.

The discussions centered on critical issues such as social cohesion, national unity, and interfaith dialogue—key themes in the context of Popenguine’s preparations. Ousmane Sonko reiterated the State’s dedication to Senegal’s long-standing values of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and communal living, while also acknowledging the vital role religious leaders play in maintaining national stability and unity.

In response, Monseigneur André Guèye conveyed his satisfaction with the visit, offering prayers for sustained peace, national harmony, and the successful implementation of initiatives aimed at advancing the country’s development. The timing of this meeting reflects the growing anticipation surrounding the Popenguine pilgrimage, widely regarded as a cornerstone of Senegal’s spiritual and cultural calendar.
