PPA-CI suspends 61 members for 6 to 18 months ahead of critical congress
The Party of African Peoples – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI), led by Laurent Gbagbo, has taken decisive disciplinary action just days before its landmark ordinary congress scheduled for May 14-15, 2026 in Abidjan. A formal communiqué released on May 13 announced sanctions against 61 members, described as “undisciplined” by the party leadership.
The measures were formalized under Council Decision No. 02-2026/CSP/PPA-CI/KKJ/07052026, approved by the party presidency the same day. The leadership justified the move as necessary to uphold internal discipline and ensure smooth preparations for the upcoming congress.
The sanctions fall into three categories:
- Group 1 (44 members): 18-month suspension, barring participation in all party activities and internal elections.
- Group 2 (10 members): 12-month suspension under the same restrictions.
- Group 3 (7 members): 6-month suspension with identical prohibitions.
The announcement comes at a politically sensitive juncture, as the PPA-CI prepares for a pivotal organizational event. Political observers interpret the sweeping disciplinary action as a bid by the leadership to consolidate control and align the party around its official line ahead of the congress.
While the party framed the sanctions as a measure to strengthen cohesion, critics suggest the move may reflect deeper internal tensions, including strategic disagreements and leadership rivalries. No public response from the suspended members has been recorded yet. The scale of the suspensions is expected to spark intense internal debates and could reshape power dynamics within the party as it approaches this defining moment in its history.
