Prime minister ousmane sonko outlines Senegal’s vast market modernization initiative
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap designed to profoundly transform Senegal’s commercial infrastructure. Confronting the advanced dilapidation of facilities, many of which date back to the 1970s, and responding to a concerning tally of 53 market fires recorded between 2013 and 2024, the head of government is integrating the Programme de Modernisation et de Gestion des Marchés (PROMOGEM) into its Strategic Plan for 2025-2029.
This ambitious initiative targets the renovation of 528 existing markets and the construction of 67 entirely new, modern complexes. The project is bolstered by a significant public investment of 57.5 billion CFA francs, allocated over a four-year period.
Agricultural campaign, flood prevention, and digital sovereignty
Regarding the 2026-2027 agricultural campaign, the Prime Minister has called for immediate corrective actions to address identified deficiencies. These include improving the targeting of beneficiaries, strengthening seed autonomy, and resolving critical storage constraints. While a comprehensive reform of subsidies is anticipated, the immediate priority involves accelerating digitalization efforts within the pilot regions of Tivaouane and Nioro.
Concerning flood management, an urgent directive has been issued for the validation of communal emergency plans. Furthermore, an inter-ministerial simulation exercise is mandated to be organized before June 15, 2026. Lastly, regarding the Sénégal Connect Park, a strategic project that is 95% complete but currently stalled by contractual disagreements, the government has requested the prompt submission of a revised completion schedule to the African Development Bank (AfDB).
