Rabat hosts the 3rd Arab postal leaders forum

The 3rd Arab Postal Leaders Forum officially opened this Tuesday, June 23, 2026, in Rabat. This major event was organized by Barid Al-Maghrib in close collaboration with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), bringing together key players to discuss the future of the industry.

Modernizing logistics for a digital era

Focused on the theme “Transforming postal supply chains for a digital future focused on e-commerce,” this two-day gathering aims to tackle the rapid transformations within the postal sector. As the digital economy and online shopping continue to expand globally, regional leaders are looking for ways to adapt their infrastructure to these new realities.

During the opening session, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Ryad Mezzour, highlighted that the forum is a vital platform for strengthening coordination between Arab nations. He argued that building an integrated and efficient postal system is necessary to remain competitive in a shifting international landscape. The Minister specifically pointed to the challenges posed by evolving consumer habits and the rise of cross-border digital transactions, urging the adoption of smart networks and advanced digital services.

Morocco’s strategy, guided by the vision of King Mohammed VI, places a high priority on the digital transition and the modernization of logistics. By aligning with international standards, the country aims to improve the overall business climate and foster economic integration.

Technological innovation and regional cooperation

Amin Benjelloun Touimi, Director General of Barid Al-Maghrib, outlined the primary hurdles facing Arab postal institutions. These include the need to upgrade logistics networks, integrate artificial intelligence, and leverage data analytics. He also emphasized the role of postal services in helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) access regional and international markets through enhanced e-commerce support.

In a video address, Masahiko Metoki, Director General of the UPU International Bureau, noted that digital tools and changing consumer expectations have permanently altered the face of global trade. He stressed that the future of the sector will be defined by innovation and public-private partnerships, reaffirming the UPU’s commitment to supporting the Arab region’s transformation.

A symbolic highlight of the event was a joint stamp issuance ceremony between Morocco and Mauritanie. This initiative, attended by Alioune Ould Issa, Director General of Mauripost, underscores the growing cooperation between the two neighbors in the postal field.

A strategic roadmap for the future

The Rabat forum follows previous editions held in the Sultanat d’Oman in 2024 and Qatar in 2025, reflecting a sustained effort to share expertise across the Arab world. Representatives from 14 Arab postal operators, the League of Arab States, and various regulatory authorities are participating in the discussions.

Key topics on the agenda include the development of “last-mile” delivery solutions, the funding of digital modernization projects, and the use of advanced technologies to improve operational performance. The forum is expected to conclude with the adoption of a strategic roadmap for 2026-2027, designed to build a more resilient and innovative Arab postal ecosystem that is fully prepared for the challenges of the digital economy.
