Roberto de zerbi: tottenham’s everton clash for premier league survival ‘more vital than a trophy’

For Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham’s survival match against Everton is « more important than a trophy »

Following their 1-2 defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday, Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi declared that Sunday’s pivotal match against Everton, crucial for their Premier League survival, holds greater significance than winning a trophy, drawing a comparison to the Europa League title the London club secured last season.

After enduring a 1-2 loss at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea on Tuesday, Tottenham (17th with 38 points) finds itself still precariously close to the relegation zone, with West Ham (18th with 36 points) looming as the primary threat for demotion. Consequently, the Spurs are set to contest a decisive fixture against Everton this Sunday at 5 PM, a game that will shape their future in the Premier League. Simultaneously, West Ham will host Leeds, adding another layer of tension to the final matchday.

Tottenham’s manager, Roberto De Zerbi, underscored the critical stakes of this 38th league day, stating, « Sunday is a final for Tottenham. Not in Bilbao against Manchester United (in the Europa League last season). The most important match is Sunday. » The 46-year-old Italian tactician further emphasized, « Now, we are playing for something more than a trophy. It’s for the pride of the club and its history. (…) It’s about dignity. »

Almost exactly a year ago, the North London outfit salvaged a disastrous Premier League campaign, concluding in 17th place, by defeating Manchester United (1-0) in the Europa League final—the club’s first major trophy since 2008. Instead of using that triumph as a springboard for future success, the English club has faltered this season and now faces the alarming prospect of relegation to the Championship for the first time since 1977.

De Zerbi remains optimistic

Tottenham, having managed only two home victories this season, absolutely must avoid defeat against the Toffees. The former Olympique Marseille coach (2024-2026) remains hopeful: « I would like us to play on Sunday as we did during the last 20 minutes (on Tuesday), where we showed more energy, more passion, something more within us, » he asserted.

« Every single player is focused on the objective. They work hard during the week, and each of us wants to achieve the goal. I believe we are playing a final (on Sunday), a critical match, but in our stadium… So, we must stay alive. But it’s a monumental day for us, » he concluded.

Tottenham’s Premier League survival is secured if:
  • They do not lose against Everton
  • They lose against Everton but West Ham does not win against Leeds
Tottenham is relegated to the Championship if:
  • They lose against Everton AND West Ham wins against Leeds
Tottenham Hotspur
