Sahel Caritas unites efforts for Mali humanitarian crisis response
A comprehensive communication strategy is being established by Caritas organizations across the Sahel to address the pressing humanitarian needs.
From Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on February 20, 2013, a significant gathering commenced with the primary goal of consolidating the efforts of Sahel Caritas bodies. This initiative aims to confront the severe food and sociopolitical crises impacting the region. The meeting, which began on February 19 in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, brought together representatives from Caritas Burkina Faso, Caritas Mali, Caritas Niger, and Caritas Sénégal. These organizations have been foundational members of the Sahel Caritas platform since its inception in 2007.
The assembly, set to conclude on February 23, includes key information officers and emergency operations managers. Their collective participation is crucial for forging a robust regional communication system, essential for coordinating assistance among the various Catholic aid organizations operating in the Sahel.
This vital consultation forms an integral part of Emergency Appeal 28/2012, specifically titled the “Project for strengthening Caritas’s overall preparedness and response capacities for humanitarian emergencies caused by the Mali crisis.”
Father Isidore Ouédraogo, the Executive Secretary of Caritas Burkina, highlighted the practical objective of the discussions. He explained that the meeting seeks to establish a unified operational framework for all communication and emergency personnel within the Sahel Caritas network, thereby significantly enhancing their collective intervention capabilities in times of crisis.
Current estimates indicate that approximately 300,000 Malian refugees have sought refuge in neighboring countries, underscoring the immense scale of the humanitarian challenge faced by the region.
