Sénégal: Koulibaly’s prolonged absence raises World Cup fears
The prolonged absence of Senegal’s esteemed defender and captain, Kalidou Koulibaly, from Al-Hilal due to a thigh injury, is raising significant concerns across the nation as the FIFA World Cup approaches in less than two months.
In Senegal, the apprehension surrounding Koulibaly’s unavailability is palpable. The 34-year-old central defender, a pivotal figure with 102 caps and two goals for the national team, has not featured for his Saudi Pro League club, Al-Hilal, since April 8th.
Koulibaly, formerly of Napoli, sustained a thigh injury during a training session, and a definitive return date to competitive play remains elusive. With just over six weeks until the global tournament kicks off, where the Lions of Teranga are set to challenge France, Norway, and Iraq in Group I, the uncertainty surrounding his fitness is palpable.
Al-Hilal offers cautious update on Koulibaly’s status
During a recent press briefing, Al-Hilal’s manager, Simone Inzaghi, adopted a cautious tone when discussing player injuries. He noted, « We currently have two injured players, Malcom and Koulibaly. While Malcom has recovered and is naturally ready, Koulibaly is dealing with a thigh contusion that has led to a hematoma. We are closely monitoring his condition daily, and his comeback will depend entirely on how he responds to treatment in the upcoming days ». The Italian coach offered no specific timeline for the defender’s return.
The Saudi club further elaborated, stating, « Kalidou Koulibaly has been undergoing his rehabilitation program at the Meena clinic, located at the club’s headquarters. This follows medical examinations conducted in Spain, which indicated a need for additional treatment sessions for his injury in the anterior thigh muscle ». With only six league matches remaining for Al-Hilal this season, considerable uncertainty still surrounds Koulibaly’s situation. Having already missed the Africa Cup of Nations final and the March friendly matches against Peru (a 2-0 victory) and Gambia (a 3-1 win), the pressing question remains: will Kalidou Koulibaly be fit enough to play again before the highly anticipated World Cup?
