strengthening african unity through parliamentary cooperation
The President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, welcomed delegates from across Africa to Dakar for the 85th session of the Executive Committee of the Pan-African Parliament on June 2 and 3, 2026. In his opening address, he underscored the urgency of fostering stronger parliamentary ties to address the continent’s pressing political, economic, and security challenges.
Sonko emphasized that Africa’s future must be shaped by Africans themselves, rooted in shared values and collective aspirations. « In a world where our continent faces complex challenges, the need for enhanced parliamentary cooperation has never been greater, » he stated.
Highlighting Senegal’s role as a bridge between nations, he reaffirmed the country’s commitment to panafrican ideals. « We must build an Africa that is united, sovereign, and capable of defending its interests on the global stage, » he declared.
As discussions unfolded, delegates explored ways to deepen integration and align national policies with continental goals. The session concluded with a renewed pledge to advance Africa’s unity and resilience, with Sonko urging participants to embrace collaboration as a cornerstone of progress.
« Let us move forward together, » he concluded. « Long live African parliamentary cooperation. Long live a united and sovereign Africa. »
