Senegal political tensions as pastef rules out government participation

In a decisive move reflecting deepening political rifts, Senegal’s Pastef-Les Patriotes party has firmly declared it will not contribute any cabinet members to the newly formed government. This announcement, made just days after Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko’s removal from office, underscores escalating tensions between the party and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s administration.

The party’s executive committee (COMEX) released a statement via Ousmane Sonko’s official Facebook page, emphasizing its decision was made « in a spirit of responsibility » while adhering to internal directives. Over recent days, extensive negotiations took place between Pastef leaders and the head of state to finalize the government’s composition. Despite a lengthy meeting between Sonko and Faye on June 1st, critical disagreements persisted regarding the role of the majority coalition in shaping the executive branch’s structure.

unresolved governance disputes stall collaboration

Following the inconclusive presidential meeting, the COMEX reviewed proposals submitted to President Faye, which ultimately failed to secure approval. With no viable path forward, Pastef opted to withdraw entirely from government formation. The communiqué was unequivocal: « Pastef-Les Patriotes will not participate in the next government nor provide any ministers ».

This political standstill arrives at a pivotal moment for Senegal, as citizens grapple with pressing economic and social challenges. Though talks collapsed, Pastef extended « full success to the new team », signaling the party’s intent to focus its efforts within the National Assembly, where Ousmane Sonko now holds the presidency. The coming days will reveal how this rupture reshapes Senegal’s political landscape.
