Senegal political tensions: Sonko warns new prime minister amid growing disputes

In a sharp escalation of rhetoric, Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko has publicly cautioned Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo, questioning his recent statements and political manoeuvres. The warning comes amid deepening divisions within the country’s leadership.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Sonko did not mince his words, making thinly veiled threats while addressing his successor’s latest public remarks.

The former Prime Minister urged the new head of government to stick to what he called the “technocratic script.” He emphasized that if Al Aminou Lo identifies as a technocrat, he should confine himself to technical governance. “I advise him to limit himself to numbers,” Sonko stated. “If he claims to be a technocrat, then he should stick to technocracy.”

Political tensions and unresolved disputes

Sonko went further, alleging that the Prime Minister had played a role in the escalating tensions between the ruling Pastef party and the President. “We are fully aware of the role he played in the problems plaguing relations between Pastef and the Head of State,” Sonko declared. “Until now, we have chosen not to disclose all the details. He should tone it down.”

The Pastef leader also criticised Al Aminou Lo’s remarks following the announcement of the new government lineup. “Yesterday, during the unveiling of the cabinet, I heard him giving unsolicited advice. Perhaps he should start by applying it to himself,” he remarked.

In a particularly forceful tone, Sonko hinted at undisclosed information that could reshape the political landscape. “We know everything,” he asserted. “We have chosen to keep certain facts quiet, but we will not tolerate further provocation.”
