Senegal politicians clash over judicial accountability amid economic crisis

Maïmouna Sène, a former lawmaker from the Alliance Pour la République (APR), has sharply criticized Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, accusing his administration of shifting focus from critical economic challenges to what she calls judicial populism.

The veteran politician, a key figure in Senegal’s former ruling party, argued that while accountability is essential, it should not become a political tool to distract from the country’s pressing needs. She emphasized that economic recovery, job creation, and inflation control remain the top priorities for the Senegalese people—not a politically charged judicial witch-hunt.

Accountability must start at home

Maïmouna Sène urged Sonko to prioritize transparency within his own government before targeting opposition figures. In a fiery statement, she challenged the Prime Minister to present evidence in court rather than making public accusations, stressing that Senegalese voters entrusted leadership to address inflation, unemployment, and economic stagnation—not to engage in retaliatory politics.

« If you have proof, take it to the courts and let justice proceed calmly. The Senegalese people did not elect you to dwell on the past, wage witch hunts, or settle personal scores. They want action: lower inflation, more jobs, and economic revival. Charity begins at home—start by cleaning up your own ranks first! »

Her remarks highlight growing tensions within Senegal’s political landscape as the government faces mounting pressure to deliver on its economic promises while navigating complex legal and institutional challenges.
