Senegal’s political landscape undergoes significant change as Ousmane Sonko is removed from office
Ousmane Sonko is no longer the Prime Minister of Senegal. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has just announced his dismissal in a televised address to the nation.
This decisive move ends a period of strained relations between the two leaders. The decision also affects all ministers and deputy ministers serving in Sonko’s government.
Ousmane Sonko took to social media to share his reaction: “Alhamdoulillah. Tonight, I will sleep peacefully at the Keur Gorgui residence.”
The dismissal of Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister also triggers the dissolution of Senegal’s government. The Presidency has announced that a new Prime Minister will be appointed and a new government formed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
This political transition comes after a historic election in 2024, when Ousmane Sonko supported Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s presidential bid after being barred from running himself. Faye won decisively with over 54% of the vote in the first round.
