Senegal three fans released after can troubles arrive in Dakar

Three Senegalese supporters freed from Moroccan detention land in Dakar

Three Senegalese football fans, previously held in Morocco over incidents during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, touched down in Dakar on Thursday evening. Abdoulaye Dieng, Ibrahima Diop, and Aziz Wade arrived at the Blaise Diagne International Airport (AIBD) at 6:25 PM aboard a Royal Air Maroc flight, greeted by a jubilant crowd eager to welcome them home.

The trio was among 18 Senegalese supporters detained in the aftermath of the high-stakes match between Senegal and Morocco. Accused of hooliganism, their charges included public disorder, throwing objects, damaging sports facilities, and assaulting law enforcement officers.

After serving a three-month prison sentence, they were released on April 18. The remaining 15 supporters, whose sentences range from six months to a year in prison, are expected to return to Senegal as their respective sentences conclude.

Background of the incidents

The football-related unrest erupted following Senegal’s victory over Morocco in the AFCON final. Authorities in Morocco took swift action, leading to multiple arrests and legal proceedings. The Court of Appeal in Rabat upheld strict penalties for those involved, reflecting the seriousness of the disturbances.

While these three supporters have now returned home, the situation remains a topic of discussion among football officials and fans alike, highlighting the need for improved safety measures during international sporting events.
