Senegal’s new government formed without ousmane sonko’s party
Senegal’s Prime Minister, Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô, announced late Monday the formation of a new 30-member government, notably excluding representatives from the PASTEF-Les Patriotes party, despite its majority in the National Assembly.
This executive reshuffle unfolds amidst a broader national political restructuring, which sees the inclusion of various technocratic and political figures within the new cabinet. Prior to the official list’s release, former Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko had already declared that his political movement’s members would not be part of this latest government.
Outlining the new team’s strategic direction, the Senegalese Prime Minister emphasized that this cabinet functions as a “government of mission and obligation of results.” He highlighted its foundation on both political and technocratic principles, alongside a significant focus on integrating youth and women.
Furthermore, he clarified that governmental action would feature a revised methodology, prioritizing institutional coherence and leveraging the expertise of both national talents and the diaspora.
This fresh governmental structure sees the reappointment of several ministers from the previous administration. Among those retaining their portfolios are Cheikh Diba for Economy, Cheikh Niane for Foreign Affairs, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye for Hydraulics and Sanitation, and Moustapha Guirassy for National Education.
Similarly, Ibrahima Sy continues as Minister of Health, Moussa Bala Fofana for Urbanism, Yankhoba Diémé for Armed Forces, Déthié Fall for Infrastructure, and Bakary Sarr for Communication, all maintaining their respective responsibilities.
This significant restructuring follows Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s decision on May 26 to appoint Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as Prime Minister. Lô’s appointment marks his succession to Ousmane Sonko, who has since been elected to lead the Senegalese National Assembly.
