Senegal’s PM Sonko rejects Western influence on homosexuality laws
Senegal’s Prime Minister Condemns Western Interference on Homosexuality
In a forceful address to lawmakers, Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has vigorously defended the country’s recent legal amendments targeting same-sex relationships, dismissing external pressures for a moratorium on enforcement.
Western ‘Tyranny’ Challenged by Senegalese Leadership
During a parliamentary session, Prime Minister Sonko characterized Western attempts to influence Senegal’s legal stance on homosexuality as an unacceptable form of cultural imperialism. He argued that a small group of nations wields disproportionate power through media control and economic leverage to impose their values globally.
“While the world’s population stands at eight billion, a handful of Western nations—driven by their economic and media dominance—seek to dictate moral standards to the rest of humanity,” Sonko stated, highlighting what he describes as a systematic effort to undermine national sovereignty.
Stricter Penalties for Same-Sex Relations
The Senegalese government enacted legislation in March that significantly increases penalties for homosexual acts, raising maximum prison sentences from five to ten years. The controversial law was signed into force by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on March 31, with Sonko reaffirming the government’s commitment to its full application.
A Nation Divided: Cultural Values vs. Human Rights Debates
Senegal, a predominantly Muslim West African nation, has long grappled with the tension between traditional values and evolving human rights discussions. The new legislation has drawn sharp criticism from international human rights organizations, who argue it violates fundamental freedoms. Conversely, supporters contend that the law better reflects Senegal’s deeply rooted cultural and religious principles.
The government maintains that its stance is a sovereign choice, rejecting foreign interference in domestic legal matters.
