Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye officially severed ties with his Prime Minister and former political comrade, Ousmane Sonko, on Friday, May 22nd. This significant development comes after months of escalating tensions between the two figures, who together rose to power in April 2024.

The popular rallying cry, « Diomaye Moy Sonko » — meaning “Diomaye is Sonko” in Wolof — has definitively lost its resonance. Ousmane Sonko was notably prevented from contesting the presidency himself, having been convicted of defamation, which resulted in the loss of his civil rights.
