Senegal’s political landscape: the end of the Faye-Sonko alliance
Following his dismissal as Prime Minister by President Faye, Ousmane Sonko has now been elected to lead the National Assembly, positioning him as the head of state’s primary political rival.
The once-unbreakable bond between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has dissolved. During the 2024 Senegalese presidential campaign, their Wolof slogan, “Diomaye Moy Sonko” (meaning “Diomaye is Sonko”), perfectly encapsulated their unified front. However, this political honeymoon concluded swiftly after their triumph, which saw the ousting of former President Macky Sall (who governed from 2012 to 2024). The emergence of political rivalries, the intricate demands of governance, and Senegal’s challenging economic state have ultimately fractured this powerful duo.
After being dismissed from his prime ministerial post by President Faye on May 22, the charismatic Ousmane Sonko quickly reclaimed his parliamentary seat within the National Assembly. Subsequently, he was elected as the Speaker of the assembly. This new role elevates him to the second most influential position in the Senegalese state, making him the constitutional successor to President Faye, but crucially, also his leading political adversary.
