Senegal’s strict anti-LGBTQ+ stance under Sonko’s leadership
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has reaffirmed the Senegalese government’s resolve to strengthen anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, emphasizing strict enforcement of existing laws. In the face of mounting international criticism, he has pushed back against foreign interference while defending the country’s sovereign right to determine its legal framework on this sensitive issue.

Government’s unwavering commitment to anti-LGBTQ+ laws
During a recent address, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko reiterated the executive’s determination to tighten legislation concerning LGBTQ+ issues in Senegal. His statements reflect the recurring national debate on legal enforcement and government policy orientations regarding this contentious matter.
Addressing the scope of legislative texts, the government leader underscored their universal application and strict enforcement. He declared: « We will not make exceptions for powerful figures because they are often the root of the problem. Once a law is passed, it applies impartially in all its rigor. »
Criticism of past inaction fuels current stance
Sonko argued that the current situation stems partly from past administrations’ failure to act decisively. He stated: « This phenomenon is not new. Previous regimes did not take the necessary measures. Had they done so, matters would not have escalated to this point. »
Defiance against Western pressure
The Prime Minister also addressed international criticism, particularly from Western partners. He asserted: « No one in Senegal opposes these laws. The only objections come from the West, especially France. We refuse to be lectured by them. » Sonko further dismissed calls for a legislative moratorium, declaring: « Even some African intellectuals are interfering, but no delays will occur. The process will continue without pause. »
