Sonko’s vision: public-private partnerships to revitalize Senegal’s national parks
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued a clear directive to the ministers overseeing Environment, Tourism, Economy, Planning and Cooperation, as well as Finance and Budget. His mandate emphasizes the imperative to implement all necessary measures to invigorate the management of Senegal’s invaluable national natural heritage.
Working in close collaboration with COSIVRA, the executive branch aims to establish a modern and sustainable framework for the operation of the nation’s national parks and other significant ecological sites. This innovative strategic direction is designed to leverage public-private partnerships (PPPs), thereby harmonizing the critical preservation of biodiversity with enhanced economic appeal.
niokolo-koba, djoudj, saloum, and technopole at the heart of the attractive strategy
This governmental instruction specifically targets key ecological systems and highly sought-after tourist destinations across the Senegalese territory. Directly impacted by this rollout of partnerships are the Niokolo-Koba National Park, Hann Park, the Saloum Delta, the Djoudj National Bird Park, alongside the particularly sensitive urban reserves of the Dakar Technopole and Lac Rose.
By entrusting the development and enhancement of these crucial sites to private operators, under stringent state supervision, the government seeks to attract substantial investments, modernize existing visitor infrastructure, and generate fresh revenue streams. Crucially, these efforts will proceed while ensuring the rigorous protection of these designated natural areas.
