How can academic research better align with the nation’s evolving needs? That was the central question addressed when leaders of Togo’s UNESCO academic chairs convened in Lomé on July 9, 2026. Organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the gathering provided a platform to assess ongoing initiatives and chart a new strategic path to amplify the impact of university-led research on national progress.
University leaders unite to redefine research for national impact
Under the leadership of the Minister of State for Higher Education and Scientific Research, Professor Gado Tchangbedji, the meeting brought together the National Commission for UNESCO and heads of the country’s public university UNESCO chairs. The session fostered an open dialogue on the future of scientific research in Togo, emphasizing collaboration and shared objectives.
Key UNESCO chairs take center stage in Togo’s research ecosystem
Representatives from three prominent UNESCO chairs were present: the UNESCO Chair in Renewable Energies at the University of Lomé, the UNESCO Chair on Women, Science and Sustainable Water Management in West Africa also at the University of Lomé, and the UNESCO Chair in ICT and Higher Education Development in West Africa based at the University of Kara.
Research as a catalyst for national transformation
The discussions focused on evaluating the achievements, challenges, and policy contributions of these chairs. The consensus was clear: their work must be further aligned with Togo’s most pressing priorities, including energy transition, sustainable water management, gender equality, and digital transformation in higher education.
Building stronger coordination for greater impact
Participants agreed on several actionable recommendations to strengthen the UNESCO chair network. A key proposal was the creation of a shared digital platform connecting the National UNESCO Commission with all chairs. This tool aims to streamline knowledge sharing, enhance activity coordination, and facilitate joint project implementation. Additionally, they called for deeper collaboration among universities and the involvement of new technical and financial partners to support research initiatives.
Government urges research that reflects national priorities
Closing the event, Professor Tchangbedji called on chair leaders to anchor their programs in Togo’s development needs. He stressed that research must deliver tangible outcomes that inform public policy and drive economic and social transformation. He also expressed hope that this meeting would mark the beginning of a new era of synergy between researchers, universities, and national institutions.
Strengthening Togo’s scientific influence through partnership
This gathering reflects the government’s commitment to harnessing the expertise within public universities. By fostering stronger ties among UNESCO chairs, expanding partnerships, and aligning research with national priorities, Togo is working to build a more dynamic scientific ecosystem capable of fueling sustainable development and innovation.
