US embassy in Rabat marks 250 years of American independence with Morocco

The U.S. Embassy in Rabat recently hosted a landmark event commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence, held for the first time at the historic Chellah site.

The gathering brought together high-ranking Moroccan officials, diplomats, and leaders from public and private sectors, celebrating nearly two and a half centuries of enduring friendship and cooperation between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco.

Morocco holds a unique place in U.S. history as the first country to officially recognize American independence, laying the foundation for one of America’s oldest diplomatic ties. The event highlighted the depth of this partnership across diplomacy, security, trade, and investment, while also showcasing expanding collaboration in innovation, infrastructure, and economic growth.

Diplomatic ties were emphasized as a cornerstone of the relationship, spanning from the historic American Legation in Tangier—the oldest U.S. diplomatic property worldwide—to the recent inauguration of the U.S. Consulate General’s new headquarters in Casablanca. These milestones reflect a shared commitment to a forward-looking partnership.

During the ceremony, U.S. Ambassador to Morocco Richard Duke Buchan III underscored the significance of the 250th anniversary, calling it an opportunity to celebrate “a partnership rooted in history, strengthened by trust, and firmly directed toward the next 250 years.”

He emphasized the importance of deepening economic and people-to-people connections, aligning with His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision of transforming the Moroccan Sahara into a hub for transatlantic partnership and opportunity.

The timing of the celebration coincided with Morocco’s participation in the World Cup hosted in the United States, further illustrating the vibrant human ties that continue to strengthen the bond between the two nations.

The evening concluded with a dazzling display of fireworks and synchronized drone lights, symbolizing the enduring friendship and shared vision for the future between the U.S. and Morocco.
