AES alliance: security progress and regional integration in the Sahel
The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is steadily reinforcing its security achievements and regional collaboration, as highlighted by Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, during a recent interview.
Strengthening military and institutional ties within the AES
Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have deepened their joint security cooperation by establishing a unified military force and a shared operational headquarters in Niamey. This initiative is designed to enhance coordination in counter-terrorism operations across the Sahel.
Diplomatic unity and global representation
The AES is also advancing its diplomatic integration, including the adoption of a common diplomatic framework and improved coordination among member embassies. These measures aim to strengthen the bloc’s unified stance in international forums, ensuring a collective voice on key global issues.
Beyond security: economic and media integration
The alliance is expanding its integration efforts beyond defense. Plans include the launch of a regional development investment bank to fund infrastructure and economic projects, alongside the creation of shared media outlets—television, radio, and print—to bolster institutional communication and combat misinformation targeting the Sahel.
Sovereignty and international recognition
Member states emphasize that the recognition of international organizations remains within their sovereign authority, reinforcing their autonomy in global engagements.
Solidarity and commitment to regional stability
A high-level AES delegation, led by General Célestin Simporé, visited Bamako to express solidarity with Mali following the passing of General Sadio Camara. The delegation, received by Malian transitional President Assimi Goïta, conveyed condolences from Burkina Faso and Niger, honoring the late general’s contributions to Sahelian military cooperation.
The visit also underscored the AES’s unwavering resolve in combating armed groups, with the delegation reaffirming the alliance’s dedication to intensifying counter-terrorism efforts across the region.
