African press union condemns Mali’s ban on Jeune Afrique magazine

The Union of Journalists of the Free African Press (UJPLA) has voiced its deep concern and strong disapproval following the Malian authorities’ decision to prohibit the sale and distribution of Jeune Afrique magazine across the entire national territory of Mali.

The UJPLA interprets this action as a severe infringement upon press freedom, freedom of expression, and the fundamental right of Malian citizens to access diverse, independent, and unbiased information.

Jeune Afrique is a widely recognized pan-African media outlet that has, for many decades, fostered democratic debate and provided critical political, economic, and social analysis of the African continent. Its prohibition establishes another alarming precedent and represents an authoritarian deviation inconsistent with Mali’s international commitments regarding human rights.

The UJPLA underscores that press freedom is not a privilege granted by authorities, nor is it a mere concession; rather, it is an inalienable right safeguarded by international conventions, notably the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Consequently, the UJPLA:

  • Strongly condemns this arbitrary decision;
  • Demands the immediate revocation of the ban on Jeune Afrique magazine in Mali;
  • Urges the Malian authorities to prioritize dialogue, transparency, and respect for fundamental liberties;
  • Calls upon human rights and press freedom organizations to mobilize against this suppressive trend.

The UJPLA reaffirms its unwavering dedication to upholding press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists throughout the African continent.
