Austria coach dismisses match-fixing claims after thrilling world cup draw with Algeria

Ralf Rangnick, the head coach for Austria, vehemently dismissed any suggestions of a pre-arranged outcome between his squad and Algeria following their sensational 3-3 draw in their final World Cup group stage encounter. This dramatic result saw both nations advance to the knockout rounds.

The German tactician pointed to the two rapid-fire goals scored in injury time as irrefutable evidence against any collusion. Algerian captain Riyad Mahrez initially put his team ahead 3-2 in the 93rd minute, seemingly securing a victory, only for Austrian substitute Sasa Kalajdzic to net an equalizer almost with the very last kick of the match.

“When a game concludes with a 3-3 scoreline, especially after witnessing what unfolded in the final 90 seconds, no one can reasonably assume there was any agreement,” stated Ralf Rangnick.

He further elaborated, “Had anyone predicted this sequence of events just three minutes from full-time, they would have been deemed utterly insane.”

“I have been involved in coaching for approximately four decades, and I genuinely cannot recall a single match with such an extraordinary progression and an utterly unpredictable trajectory,” Rangnick remarked.

“Most observers were anticipating a 0-0 or a 1-1 finish, yet it culminated in a 3-3 draw. It’s simply unbelievable. The dressing room was in absolute pandemonium. If Alfred Hitchcock himself had penned such a script, I would likely have declared him completely mad.”

Ralf Rangnick also highlighted that both teams maintained their attacking intent and continued striving for goals even before Riyad Mahrez’s late strike.

“Anyone who watched the match during the final 15 minutes will clearly understand there were no indications whatsoever that the players were actively seeking a draw,” he declared. “My belief is that they were determined to win.”

“No one can convince me that at the 93rd minute, someone would suddenly decide, ‘Oh yes, let’s score another goal.’ I concede that this might have crossed the minds of one or two Algerian players, but I am confident it was not the sentiment of the rest of the team, and certainly not mine.”
