Bamako documentary film festival highlights Mali’s quest for sovereignty and security

The International Documentary Film Festival “Our Heroes” took place in Bamako on June 16, centering its program on two significant films that address the security crisis Mali has faced in recent years. These screenings provided a platform to reflect on the nation’s shifting alliances and its path toward independence.

Documenting the end of an era with France

The first documentary, titled “Au revoir la France” (Goodbye France), explores the complexities of the conflict in Mali and the historical military cooperation between the French and Malian armies. The film provides a detailed look at the challenges encountered during this partnership and the eventual decision by Mali to break ties with France.

Aboubacar Sidki Fomba, a member of the CNT who attended the screening, noted that the film’s title represents more than just a departure. According to him, it signals the arrival of Malian sovereignty and the restoration of national honor. He expressed that the documentary serves as a powerful motivator for the Malian people to persist in their struggle for self-determination and to distance themselves from colonial legacies.

Focusing on the Russian partnership

The second film presented at the festival shifted the narrative toward the current cooperation with Russia. Malian filmmaker Boubacar Sidibé emphasized that these cinematic works should serve as a wake-up call for all citizens. He explained that this second production illustrates Mali’s current strategic relationship with the Russian Federation, bringing the critical stakes of this collaboration to the forefront.

Alexandre Kharchenko, a Russian director involved in the project, stated that the shared interests between Mali and Russia formed the basis for these screenings. He highlighted a deliberate choice to engage with the public through physical screenings rather than relying on social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram, seeking a more direct connection with the audience.

A call for national resilience

Nathalie Dembélé, Vice-President of the Perspective Sahélienne Association, shared her perspective on the event’s objectives. She clarified that the purpose of showing these films was to encourage a collective awakening among Malians and to celebrate their ongoing resilience. She noted that the focus was not on disparaging others, but on empowering the Malian people to recognize their own strength in a changing world.
