Bénin launches new government era with Wadagni’s strategic directives

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, Romuald Wadagni, President of the Republic of Bénin, led the inaugural Council of Ministers of his seven-year term, spanning 2026 to 2033. Just days after his official swearing-in, the newly formed government convened at the Palais de la Marina to receive the President’s foundational guidance for the administration ahead.

Ministers sworn in to serve, not to privilege

In his opening address, President Wadagni warmly congratulated the newly appointed ministers, emphasizing that their position is not a personal honor but a national mission demanding unwavering commitment. He urged them to uphold the highest standards of integrity, sobriety, and solidarity, warning against partisan interests or self-serving agendas in public sector decision-making.

Equitable development and security at the forefront

The President outlined two critical pillars for the new administration: closing regional disparities and ensuring national security. He called for intensified efforts to bridge development gaps across Bénin, focusing on modern infrastructure, improved access to essential public services, and increased investments in local communities.

Security remains a top priority, especially in light of recent armed attacks in northern regions. The government was tasked with sustaining robust defense and protection measures to safeguard the country and restore stability in affected areas.

Streamlined governance for greater efficiency

To enhance operational efficiency, the executive branch announced a restructured meeting schedule. The Council of Ministers will now convene monthly on the first Wednesday, with additional extraordinary sessions when necessary. The Interministerial Committee will meet twice monthly, specifically on the first and third Mondays, ensuring tighter coordination among ministries.

The government also plans to introduce joint sessions, uniting the Interministerial Committee, the Council of Ministers, and sector-specific ministers to tackle complex policy challenges. This inaugural meeting symbolizes the official launch of the new administration’s institutional framework, following President Wadagni’s oath of office on May 24, 2026.
