Tchad secures major urban development deals at Baku forum
The Minister of Land Use Planning, Urban Development, and Housing presented on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the outcomes of Chad’s delegation’s participation in the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The debriefing session, held in the minister’s office, brought together key stakeholders involved in the mission.
The Chadian delegation, led by the minister, included the first deputy mayor of N’Djamena, officials from SOPROFIM, and representatives from UN-Habitat. Discussions at the forum centered on pressing urban challenges, including housing deficits, sustainable urbanization, and climate-resilient city planning.
Chad’s urban diplomacy pays off
According to the minister, Chad’s engagement at the forum significantly boosted the country’s profile in global urban development debates. A dedicated pavilion showcased Chad’s national initiatives in urban planning and housing, highlighting progress and future goals.
One of the most notable outcomes was the confirmation of an official visit by the UN-Habitat Executive Director to Chad from September 9 to 11, 2026. This visit will allow a firsthand assessment of urban realities in the country and review submitted project proposals.
Additionally, Chad has been selected as one of the ten eligible countries for the UN Green Fund, following a proposal backed by Kenya. This inclusion could unlock substantial funding for urban resilience projects, particularly flood mitigation efforts.
New partnerships on the horizon
During the forum, Chad initiated discussions with Kenya and Morocco to explore collaboration in urban development, social housing, and informal settlement upgrading. Future joint missions and knowledge-sharing initiatives are in the pipeline to strengthen these partnerships.
The minister emphasized that this mission marks a turning point for Chad, offering tangible pathways to translate international opportunities into tangible urban development projects for communities across the country.
Chad’s active participation in WUF13 underscores its commitment to fostering inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient urban growth, aligning with the national development vision outlined by President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.
