Bénin politics: LD party upholds opposition stance as FCBE shifts allegiance
Bénin’s political landscape shifts with FCBE’s departure from opposition
In a decisive move on May 9, the political party Les Démocrates (LD) reaffirmed its commitment to remaining in the opposition bloc during an extraordinary national council meeting. The gathering, centered on « structural challenges and future prospects », came shortly after the Forces cauris pour un Bénin émergent (FCBE) formally exited the opposition alliance following Romuald Wadagni’s presidential victory.
The LD’s declaration, read by Lambert De La Pierre Sodji and signed by party leader Nourénou Atchadé, was accompanied by an official reminder of its registered opposition status with the Interior Ministry since April 26, 2022. « The Party Les Démocrates solemnly reaffirms its dedication to political opposition », the communiqué stated, emphasizing the indispensable role of a credible, organized opposition in any thriving democracy.
The party pledged to exercise constructive political scrutiny against President-elect Romuald Wadagni while vowing to « uphold republican institutions » in their approach. This stance positions LD as the primary opposition force in Benin’s current political configuration.
FCBE’s strategic realignment after electoral setbacks
The FCBE, historically a moderate opposition player, officially distanced itself from the opposition bloc following internal deliberations. The decision comes in response to the party’s disappointing electoral performance in the recent presidential and legislative polls.
Presidential candidate Paul Hounkpè, who has since left the party, secured only 5.95% of votes, trailing far behind Romuald Wadagni, who emerged victorious. The FCBE also failed to secure any parliamentary seats in the legislative elections, prompting party strategist Yaya Garba to state, « The people’s choice is clear, and we must align with it ».
In a conciliatory gesture, the FCBE congratulated outgoing President Patrice Talon for his two terms and praised the smooth conduct of the presidential elections. With the FCBE’s realignment, Les Démocrates now stand as the sole major party actively maintaining opposition status in Benin’s evolving political scene. Notably, LD had not participated in the presidential race due to insufficient political endorsements under Benin’s electoral code.
The timing of LD’s council meeting coincides with Benin’s transition period, as the country prepares for the installation of its new executive leadership following the finalization of presidential election results.
