Benin strengthens emergency medical response with 600 new oxygen concentrators
The Beninese healthcare landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. On Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Minister of Health, Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, officially took delivery of 600 state-of-the-art oxygen concentrators. This initiative is designed to bolster the emergency response capabilities of 23 medical facilities across the nation.
Advanced medical equipment to protect lives
Procured by UNICEF with financial backing from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this acquisition represents a total investment exceeding $205,450 (approximately 116 million FCFA). These “10LPM single flow” devices are engineered to provide a reliable and continuous supply of oxygen, a critical necessity for patients suffering from severe respiratory distress.
The distribution of these units will prioritize 23 clinics and hospitals located in several key departments, including Alibori, Littoral, Atacora, Borgou, Donga, Couffo, and Atlantique.
A strategic move to lower maternal and infant mortality
According to Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin, this delivery is a cornerstone of a broader national strategy aimed at reducing maternal, neonatal, and pediatric mortality rates. During the official ceremony, he emphasized that the availability of medical oxygen is a vital component in ensuring that every citizen has fair access to high-quality medical treatment, regardless of their location.
Strengthening international health cooperation
The official handover ceremony featured prominent figures, including His Excellency Wei Zhang, the Chinese Ambassador, and Ousmane Niang, the UNICEF Resident Representative. Ambassador Zhang praised the strong diplomatic ties between China and Benin, confirming Beijing’s ongoing commitment to supporting the local health sector.
The UNICEF representative further noted that these resources, funded through the generosity of individual donors in China, will substantially improve the resilience of Benin’s health system when facing life-threatening emergencies. This upgrade to the national technical platform reflects the government’s persistent efforts to modernize public health services and enhance clinical performance.
