Burkina Faso and Serbia deepen ties to boost defence and security cooperation
High-level diplomatic engagement between Burkina Faso and Serbia is gathering momentum, as Ouagadougou welcomes a delegation of Serbian lawmakers led by Slavenko Ristic. The visit, which unfolded on June 3, 2026, underscored both nations’ shared ambition to forge stronger bilateral ties, with a sharp focus on defence, security and human capital development.
Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabè Abroad, and Bêbgnasgnan Stella Eldine Kabré/Kaboré, Deputy Minister, hosted the Serbian parliamentarians at a working session in the capital. The agenda centred on identifying concrete avenues for collaboration that could enhance regional stability and mutual growth.

Slavenko Ristic, also CEO of the Serbian defence-technology firm Tehnicki Remont Bratunac and Chair of the Serbian Parliament’s Defence and Security Committee, praised Burkina Faso’s current trajectory and the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré. « The vision embraced by the President of Faso resonates deeply in my country, » he remarked, adding that Serbia views Africa as a pivotal partner in shaping tomorrow’s global landscape. « Africa is the future, and we intend to be part of it, » he stressed.
Minister Traoré welcomed the Serbian initiative, calling it a clear sign of Belgrade’s growing interest in Burkina Faso. He noted that untapped potential still exists across multiple sectors and expressed confidence that both countries could unlock significant synergies through expanded cooperation.

During the talks, Minister Traoré outlined Burkina Faso’s ongoing push to diversify its international partnerships, highlighting Eastern European nations as key targets. « We seek partners who can deliver mutually beneficial outcomes, » he stated. He also urged the Serbian delegation to help bridge gaps between African realities and European policymakers, fostering a more balanced and equitable cooperation framework.
In response, Slavenko Ristic pledged to champion Burkina Faso’s interests—and Africa’s broader agenda—within European decision-making circles, aiming to recalibrate the continent’s global partnerships.
This high-profile meeting signals a fresh chapter in relations between Ouagadougou and Belgrade, reflecting Burkina Faso’s broader strategy to cultivate strategic alliances beyond its traditional partners.
