Cameroon mourns ‘maman kamto’, a steadfast mrc activist
A dedicated activist’s passing
The Mouvement pour la renaissance du Cameroun (MRC) is in mourning following the death of its dedicated activist, “Maman Kamto“. She passed away on Monday, June 22, 2026, after suffering a third cerebrovascular accident (CVA) in just a few months.
“Maman Kamto” first gained public recognition in 2025 during a protest outside the MRC headquarters in Grand Moulin, Douala, Cameroon’s economic hub. The demonstration occurred when Maurice Kamto, returning from a European tour, was prevented by police from accessing his party’s regional office in Douala.
During that pivotal moment, party supporters gathered at the Douala headquarters to voice their frustration. “Maman Kamto” stood out, holding a symbolic “tree of peace” as she confronted the security forces. Her commitment extended beyond protests; she was also known for consistently visiting political prisoners detained in connection with the post-electoral crisis.
