Canaries Parliament commends Moroccan consul’s diplomatic achievements
Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament, met this Wednesday with Fatiha El Kamouri, Morocco’s Consul General to the Canary Islands, marking the conclusion of her four-year tenure leading the consular mission. The meeting served to acknowledge the significant progress made in strengthening institutional relations between Morocco and the Canary Islands during her mandate.
During the gathering, Pérez expressed her sincere appreciation for the consul’s dedicated work, emphasizing the vital role of dialogue and cooperation between the two institutions. She also wished El Kamouri success in her future professional endeavors.
Originally from Western Sahara, Fatiha El Kamouri arrived in the Canary Islands in 2022 after serving for six years as Morocco’s Consul in Bilbao. During her tenure there, she played a pivotal role in fostering institutional relations and supporting the Moroccan community residing in the region.
Local observers in the Canary Islands have noted the considerable positive impact of Consul El Kamouri’s work in deepening the strong ties between the regional government, led by Fernando Clavijo, and Morocco. Her efforts have contributed to aligning the islands’ policies with Spain’s national stance, particularly regarding the Moroccan autonomy initiative for the Sahara, which Clavijo openly supports.
This strategic alignment reflects more than just diplomatic courtesy; it demonstrates a clear understanding of shared security interests, regional stability, and the substantial economic and trade benefits that collaboration brings.
The growing institutional partnership highlights the Canary Islands’ emergence as a natural partner in Morocco’s development plans, moving beyond previous divisions to embrace collaboration that benefits both regions.
Key sectors driving collaboration
Several strategic sectors stand out in this evolving partnership. The Canary Islands’ expertise in water desalination, infrastructure management, and technological innovation has found a receptive audience in Morocco’s southern provinces. Meanwhile, businesses from both regions are actively exploring joint ventures, proving that mutual benefit forms the strongest foundation for lasting peace and shared prosperity.
Consul Fatiha El Kamouri’s efforts over the past four years have been instrumental in laying the groundwork for this flourishing relationship.
