This Saturday, May 16, marks a full year since Succès Masra was incarcerated. What is the current state of his political party, Les Transformateurs, which he founded?

Succès Masra, the former prime minister and leader of the opposition party Les Transformateurs, was apprehended on charges of inciting hatred following outbreaks of inter-communal violence in southern Chad. He received a 20-year prison sentence in August 2025.

For the leadership and members of Les Transformateurs, this Saturday, May 16, marks a sorrowful anniversary. It was on this day one year ago that their prominent leader, Succès Masra, was taken from his home in the early morning hours.

Despite their leader’s year-long detention, the party maintains a reassuring stance, as explained by its Secretary-General, Doctor Tog-Yeum Nagorngar.

“President Succès Masra, though imprisoned, remains a guiding presence among us. The party is thriving and continues to focus steadfastly on its objectives, undisturbed by external factors. Doctor Succès Masra has committed no act warranting his year-long imprisonment. No credible evidence has been presented to substantiate the accusations against him. We firmly believe this to be an administrative and judicial error. The sole individual capable of rectifying this injustice today is Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, and we trust he will fulfill his responsibilities.”

Numerous opposition figures detained

Just last week, eight other leaders from opposition parties, all members of the Groupe de Concertation des Acteurs Politiques (GCAP), received 8-year prison sentences. They were convicted of “criminal association, insurrectional movements, rebellion, and possession of war weapons” after allegedly planning a peaceful protest. Sosthène Mbernodji, coordinator of the Mouvement Citoyen pour la Préservation des Libertés (MCPL), expressed his deep regret over these arrests, asserting that Chad now lacks any meaningful political opposition.

“Les Transformateurs, with their leader incarcerated for a year now, have seen their operational capacity significantly curtailed. The Groupe de Concertation des Acteurs Politiques (GCAP) was the last remaining coalition vocalizing an alternative perspective. Yet, the authorities have weaponized the justice system to disband this group and silence its eight leading members. I believe we are no longer operating within a democracy; rather, a monarchy is solidifying its long-term grip on power, which is a regrettable development for Chad. It’s imperative to ease the social and political tension to allow for progress. At this juncture, the country has regressed nearly 40 to 50 years, returning to a single-party system reminiscent of the post-independence era.”

In response to this wave of arrests and convictions, approximately twenty opposition parties collectively issued a press release. They vehemently denounced what they perceive as the suppression of dissenting voices and the blatant instrumentalization of the judiciary.
