Covid-19 vaccination efforts in Mali struggling to meet targets

Covid-19 vaccination in Mali falls short of 70% target

Despite ongoing efforts, Mali has vaccinated only 8% of its population against Covid-19, far below the national target.

Mali’s Covid-19 vaccination campaign has significantly underperformed. Health authorities had set an ambitious goal of vaccinating 70% of residents aged 12 and older. However, current statistics show only 8% coverage, prompting urgent intervention from the United Nations.

An UN delegation visited Bamako in early October to assess the situation and provide strategic support. Their mission aligns with Mali’s National Deployment and Vaccination Plan (PNDV), developed in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

“Multiple vaccination campaigns are currently active. We’re here to collaborate with the government and its partners to bolster these initiatives and safeguard the population from Covid-19,” stated Ted Chaiban, UNICEF’s Global Lead for Covid-19 Vaccine Preparedness.

Overcoming vaccine hesitancy in Mali

While organizational efforts in Bamako have improved, convincing resistant segments of the population remains challenging. The Mali Red Cross has established an extensive operational framework, training volunteers and conducting community outreach while distributing protective equipment.

Nevertheless, persuading Malians who remain skeptical about vaccination—especially as Covid-19 cases decline—proves difficult. Health officials emphasize the importance of continued education and community engagement to build trust in immunization programs.
