ANACIM has raised the alarm about a dangerous swell and powerful winds forecasted to strike parts of Senegal’s coastline in the coming days. The agency warns that maritime conditions will become increasingly treacherous from Tuesday, May 12, through Saturday, May 16.
Expected sea conditions and wind patterns
According to meteorological forecasts, a northwesterly swell exceeding 2.5 meters is predicted to hit the Grande Côte starting at 3:00 AM on May 12. The swell will then reach Dakar by 1:00 AM on May 13 and persist until at least May 16 at 1:00 AM.
In addition, strong northerly winds with gusts up to 40 km/h are expected along the Grande Côte from Monday, May 11, at 11:00 PM through Wednesday, May 13, at 7:00 AM. These conditions will contribute to rough seas and dangerous wave activity, particularly affecting lightweight vessels.
Potential risks and impacts
- Highly agitated sea conditions disrupting navigation and fishing activities
- Increased risk of accidents for small boats and coastal vessels
- Potential flooding or erosion in low-lying coastal areas
- Hazardous wave action posing threats to fishermen and beachgoers
The ANACIM urges all maritime workers, fishermen, and coastal residents to exercise extreme caution and adhere strictly to safety guidelines during this period.
