Deadly shooting near ORTM headquarters in Bamako

In Bamako, the capital of Mali, a tragic incident unfolded at dawn when two young men were fatally shot by military personnel near the headquarters of the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision du Mali (ORTM). The confrontation occurred around 5:30 AM, in a high-security zone that also houses a prominent hotel in the city.

The two individuals, traveling on a motorcycle, allegedly attempted to breach security checkpoints surrounding the national broadcaster, according to military authorities. However, conflicting accounts from local residents suggest they may have been seasonal workers heading to a nearby construction site.

The incident has sparked debate over the use of lethal force by security personnel, especially as Bamako residents grow accustomed to the frequent security checkpoints that have become a part of daily life in the city.

Security measures heightened after deadly confrontation

The checkpoints near the ORTM were established in response to escalating clashes between the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), which had launched coordinated attacks across seven locations, including Bamako, just days prior. Military officials stated that the two men failed to heed warning shots after allegedly forcing their way through the first checkpoint. Subsequent orders to halt were reportedly ignored, leading to the fatal shooting.

A local driver, who preferred to remain anonymous, emphasized the risks of navigating restricted zones during such periods of heightened alert. « Everyone knows these areas are off-limits without authorization. During security alerts, compliance is non-negotiable. The soldiers acted within their mandate to protect a critical infrastructure hub. »

Unanswered questions linger after fatal shooting

Not everyone shares this perspective. Seyba, another resident of Bamako, argued that the military could have employed alternative tactics to neutralize the situation without resorting to lethal force. « Why not aim for the motorcycle or disable the bike to force a stop? Now, with both individuals dead, we’ll never truly know their motives. Even if they were suspected militants, this incident leaves too many unanswered questions. »

Local testimonies gathered on-site indicate that the two victims were indeed seasonal laborers heading to their worksite. Authorities speculate they may have been unaware of the strict access restrictions in place.

In the aftermath of the shooting, security around the ORTM headquarters has been significantly reinforced. Similar measures have been implemented at military camps across the capital, as well as at Bamako-Sénou International Airport, where access is now restricted to travelers and authorized personnel only.
