Who are the Rapid Intervention Battalions?

The BIR operates as an elite force within Cameroon’s military structure, directly reporting to the President. With backing from the United States, this specialized unit has been instrumental in countering Boko Haram insurgents in the country’s northern regions and separatist factions in the west.

Its funding remains classified, reportedly sourced outside the national defense budget, with some reports suggesting contributions from the national hydrocarbons company. The BIR is distinguished by its own insignia—a lion emblem—and its headquarters in Yaoundé, known locally as Bastos.

Operational structure and history

Established in the early 2000s, the BIR initially consisted of three battalions, one per inter-arms military region. Each battalion was composed of specialized units, including an intervention squad, command and support sections, and light strike teams totaling over 300 personnel combined.
