Eurodeputy warns of anti-lgbtq+ crackdown in Senegal

In a bold stance against rising anti-LGBTQ+ hostility, French Member of the European Parliament Manon Aubry has condemned what she describes as a systematic persecution of homosexual individuals in Senegal. The left-wing politician is urging immediate diplomatic action from France to safeguard those at risk and address the escalating human rights crisis.

Harsh penalties spark international outcry

Manon Aubry has highlighted Senegal’s controversial legislation, which now imposes prison sentences of up to a decade for consensual same-sex relations. She argues that such laws violate fundamental human rights and called for their immediate repeal.

« Being gay is not a crime. No one should face imprisonment for who they love, » she stated in a widely shared statement. « The Senegalese government must end this persecution, and the French government must stand firmly with those fleeing this oppression. »

Diplomatic pressure grows for detained individuals

A French national currently detained under these charges has also drawn Aubry’s attention. She insists that Paris must secure his release and ensure protection for Senegalese asylum seekers fleeing persecution in their home country.

« France must act swiftly—not only for its citizen but for all those seeking refuge from this brutal crackdown, » she emphasized. Her call underscores a growing demand for international solidarity amid worsening conditions for LGBTQ+ communities in West Africa.
