Jacob Nguini: a symbol of unity in Bafoussam 1st
In the heart of the West Region of Cameroon, the story of Jacob Nguini stands as a powerful testament to national cohesion and republican integration. As the fifth deputy mayor of Bafoussam 1st from 2013 to 2020, his journey challenges tribal divides and exemplifies how integration can thrive in local governance.
From Abong-Mbang to Bafoussam: a journey of integration
Jacob Nguini, born in Abong-Mbang in the East Region, embodies the spirit of Cameroon’s national unity. Despite his origins, he chose Bafoussam—a city in the West Region—as his home, where he established roots and raised his family. His children attend school in the city, which he affectionately calls their “second village.”
His political career in Bafoussam 1st began when he was elected as deputy mayor in 2013. Remarkably, he was supported by a predominantly Bamiléké electorate, a community known for its strong local identity. Yet, they embraced him warmly, often addressing him as “Monsieur le Maire,” a sign of his deep integration and acceptance.
Breaking barriers: merit over tribalism
Nguini’s story is frequently cited by political analysts as proof that Cameroon’s governance system rewards merit and commitment over tribal or regional affiliations. As a journalist by training and a graduate of the École Supérieure des Sciences et Techniques de l’Information et de la Communication (ESSTIC, 1989-1990), he transitioned from media work to local politics, becoming a respected figure in the West Region.
After his mandate, he continued contributing to regional development by serving as the Head of Communication for the West Regional Council. His career trajectory remains a reference for many Cameroonians advocating for inclusive governance.
A life committed to the community
Nguini’s commitment to the people of Bafoussam 1st goes beyond politics. He chose to live permanently in the city, acquiring a residence and building a life there. His active participation in local institutions—such as his role in the Regional Council—further solidified his bond with the community.
His journey sends a clear message: Cameroon’s strength lies in its diversity, and integration is not just a concept but a lived reality in many municipalities.
Legacy of unity in Cameroonian politics
The story of Jacob Nguini is a reminder that national cohesion is possible when leaders prioritize service over division. It challenges the narrative of exclusion and tribalism that often dominates political discourse in Cameroon.
As Cameroon continues to grow, figures like Nguini serve as beacons, proving that unity and shared progress are attainable goals for a nation rich in culture and diversity.
