Jnim jihadists publicly execute quranic teacher in Mali’s Tonka, Timbuktu region

In a chilling display of extremist violence, Abdoul Salam Maïga, a respected Quranic teacher associated with a medersa in Tonka, Mali, was publicly executed by armed jihadists from the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (Jnim). The incident unfolded near the local market in the Timbuktu region, where Maïga was engaged in a peaceful discussion with friends in a traditional gathering known as a “grin.”

Eyewitnesses report that the Jnim militants forcibly took Maïga from his gathering. Shortly thereafter, they reappeared with the Quranic teacher, his eyes blindfolded, and proceeded to execute him by gunfire in full public view. This brutal act has sent shockwaves through the community of Tonka.

While some speculate that Maïga’s assassination might stem from religious disagreements, possibly his refusal to cooperate with the militants, the prevailing belief among local residents points to his alleged ties with the Malian army as the primary motive for the Jnim’s targeted killing. Such accusations by jihadist groups often lead to severe repercussions for individuals in areas under their influence.

This latest assassination is not an isolated incident in Tonka or the broader Mali region. Last November, the community was similarly grieved by the public execution of Mariam Cissé, a young TikTok user known for openly expressing her support for the Malian military. Her death had ignited widespread indignation and a surge of patriotism across the nation.

Furthermore, in late March, Amadou Baby, a prominent leader within Tonka’s youth organization, was gunned down in the street. His association had been under suspicion by jihadist factions for allegedly providing intelligence to Malian forces, despite the fact that Tonka itself does not host a military camp. These repeated acts of violence underscore the precarious security situation in the central Sahel.

A local resident, expressing the profound impact of these events, shared, “The people in Tonka, Diré, Goundam, and Timbuktu are utterly shocked by all these assassinations. It has created immense distress throughout the entire region.” The escalating violence by Jnim jihadists continues to destabilize communities and sow fear in Mali.
