Lille controls its european destiny

Beyond the already secured top two spots held by Paris Saint-Germain and RC Lens, three clubs remain locked in a fierce contest for the third and final direct qualification place for the Champions League: Lille (3rd, 61 points), Lyon (4th, 60 points), and Rennes (5th, 59 points).

Unbeaten since February 1st, a remarkable thirteen-match streak, the Lille players are in the strongest position to claim this coveted third place. Should LOSC triumph over Auxerre, who are fighting to avoid the relegation playoff, they cannot be surpassed. The northern club has already guaranteed itself at least fifth place in Ligue 1, which secures a spot in the Europa League. Meanwhile, Lyon’s players are closely watching for any misstep from Lille as they prepare to host Lens. If Lyon defeats the Sang et Or, who may have their minds on their upcoming Coupe de France final against Nice next week, they could at minimum secure a Champions League preliminary round spot.

Marseille versus Rennes: a high-stakes clash

The intense encounter at the Vélodrome between Olympique de Marseille and Rennes could prove costly for the losing side. If Stade Rennais avoids defeat, they are assured of participating in the Europa League, or potentially even better with a victory. However, a loss could relegate them to the considerably less prestigious and less lucrative Europa Conference League. Franck Haise’s squad has recently suffered two setbacks against direct European rivals (Lille, 2-1, and Lyon, 4-2). For Marseille coach Habib Beye, who faces his former club after being dismissed in February, the pressure is even more intense.

Following a season marked by numerous sporting and off-field challenges, the Marseillais, who secured an unconvincing victory against Le Havre after a disastrous outing in Nantes, are desperate to improve upon their current 6th place. Nevertheless, a defeat could strip Marseille of everything: Monaco, sitting seventh just two points behind OM, could leapfrog the Olympiens and deny them a European spot if they secure a victory against Strasbourg.

The relegation playoff: Le Havre, Auxerre, or Nice?

The Normans could find themselves in the playoff spot if their two rivals for survival secure victories, a culmination of Le Havre’s prolonged slump, as they haven’t won a match since early February against Strasbourg.
