The closing round of Ligue 1 action saw significant unrest, with two fixtures notably impacted by pitch invasions. The match between Nantes and Toulouse at La Beaujoire was ultimately abandoned following fan intrusions.

Sunday evening’s final ten-match schedule was unfortunately overshadowed by severe incidents, particularly at stadiums in Nice and Nantes.

In Nice, supporters breached security barriers towards the conclusion of their game against Metz, necessitating intervention from riot police to restore order. However, the situation escalated more dramatically in Nantes.

The Canaris, already facing relegation to Ligue 2, were unable to complete their fixture against Toulouse. Just 22 minutes into play, dozens of Nantes supporters, many with their faces concealed, stormed the pitch, compelling players to retreat to the changing rooms.

“This is a disgrace”

Forty minutes later, the game was definitively called off. This was a particularly bitter end for Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodžić, who was managing his final career match from the dugout.

He expressed his profound disappointment, stating, “This is a disgrace. I wished I could have approached the supporters to tell them to stop. While I completely understand their frustration, this is not the way. I gave everything I could as a coach and as a man. Regrettably, the reality is stark.”

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) has yet to issue a public statement but has initiated an investigation into the incidents. FC Nantes faces potentially severe penalties. Beyond a temporary closure of sections of their stadium, the club could incur a points deduction for the upcoming Ligue 2 season.

This mirrors a precedent set four years prior when Saint-Étienne was hit with a six-point penalty before their season even began, following similar fan disturbances.
