Bamako took center stage as Mali hosted a landmark panafrican media forum, bringing together journalists, educators, and digital experts from across the continent. Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga joined the opening session, which featured panels on critical themes including media literacy in the digital age, combating misinformation, and equipping journalists with verification tools.

The event, held from June 3 to 6, shone a spotlight on the growing influence of social media in shaping public perception, particularly among Mali‘s youth. According to Aboubacar Abdoulwahidou Maïga, director-general of a leading journalism school and panelist, internet penetration in Mali has skyrocketed from just 2% in 2012 to 35% today. Notably, 80% of connected citizens are under 35, with 60% relying on social platforms for news—highlighting both the opportunities and challenges of the digital landscape.

Aziz Boucetta, editor-in-chief of Panorapost.com, emphasized the forum’s significance, stating, “The panafrican family has gathered in Mali to address challenges that, once acknowledged, are entirely surmountable.” He added that Morocco, the guest of honor, responded to Mali‘s call and aims to share its expertise while fostering partnerships to drive African development.

Prime Minister Maïga framed the event within a broader regional context, noting that the Sahel faces complex security threats intertwined with fierce battles of perception. “Modern conflicts are no longer fought solely on the battlefield—they unfold in the digital and informational spheres,” he remarked. “In this reality, journalists emerge as pivotal actors in safeguarding state stability, social cohesion, and societal resilience.”

The Prime Minister underscored the urgency of strengthening professional media capacities across Africa. “African media must be empowered to fulfill their mission effectively,” he asserted, calling for concerted efforts to build local and continental expertise.
