Manchester united secures champions league spot with thrilling forest triumph
Already guaranteed a place in the next UEFA Champions League campaign, Manchester United cemented their third-place standing in the Premier League. The Red Devils delivered an exhilarating attacking display at Old Trafford this Sunday, overcoming Nottingham Forest with a 3-2 victory on the 37th matchday of the season.
D’une superbe demi-volée, Luke Shaw a ouvert le score très tôt dans le match pour Manchester United.
Manchester United continued their impressive late-season form. Facing a Nottingham Forest side already safe from relegation but still reeling from their Europa League semi-final exit against Aston Villa (1-0, 0-4), the Red Devils quickly took control, largely thanks to Luke Shaw.
The England international, who hadn’t found the net in nearly three years, broke the deadlock in just the 4th minute with a magnificent low half-volley from the edge of the box. Displaying dominance throughout the half, Michael Carrick’s squad created numerous opportunities but couldn’t extend their lead before the interval, despite several clear-cut chances falling to Bryan Mbeumo.
Against the run of play, Nottingham managed to pull level shortly after the restart. From a short corner, Morato capitalized on lax marking to head home an equalizer in the 53rd minute. However, Manchester United responded almost immediately with a highly contentious play. Following a handball by Mbeumo in the box, which went unpunished after a lengthy VAR review, Cunha restored the lead for the Mancunians in the 55th minute.
Bruno Fernandes equals Henry and De Bruyne’s record
Often influential but previously unlucky, Mbeumo finally got his reward in the 76th minute, converting a powerful cross from Bruno Fernandes right in front of goal. This marked the Portuguese midfielder’s 20th assist of the season, a feat that sees him draw level with the historic Premier League record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. Nottingham kept the suspense alive when Gibbs-White scored just two minutes later (78th minute), but United held on to their advantage until the final whistle, concluding a truly animated encounter.
Bruno Fernandes now has one more matchday to attempt to break the single-season assist record when the Mancunians travel to Brighton next Sunday. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest will look to secure a home victory against Bournemouth.
