Mauritania’s francophonie bid gets Gabon’s backing in strategic talks

High-level diplomatic exchanges have strengthened ties between Gabon and Mauritania, as Nouakchott seeks regional support for its bid to lead the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).

The meeting in Libreville brought together Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema with Messouda Bahama Mohamed Laghdaf, special envoy of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. The Mauritanian minister carried a formal message from her country’s leadership, emphasizing the deep historical bonds between the two nations—rooted in solidarity, mutual respect, and shared commitment to common continental challenges.

During the discussions, Mauritania officially presented its candidacy for the OIF Secretary-General position. The proposal, championed by Dr. Koumba Ba, outlines a strategic vision centered on three core pillars: coherence, balance, and direct utility to member states. This framework aims to foster a more responsive and development-driven Francophonie that aligns with Africa’s evolving priorities.

The encounter underscored the robust and seamless diplomatic relationship between Gabon and Mauritania. In response, President Oligui Nguema reaffirmed Gabon’s dedication to consensus-building and inclusive governance—a guiding principle in its continental diplomacy. The talks reflect Gabon’s proactive foreign policy, which seeks to expand African partnerships while championing a Francophonie that prioritizes tangible progress and collective advancement.
