Togo is vigorously pursuing its aviation sector modernization strategy, marked by the signing of two pivotal agreements designed to bolster the industry’s energy transition and enhance the supply infrastructure at Lomé International Airport. These collaborative ventures, forged between the Société Aéroportuaire de Lomé-Tokoin (SALT) and T-OIL, a Togolese state-owned enterprise specializing in procurement, lay the groundwork for the gradual integration of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) across the nation. Additionally, the plans include the construction of a new 1,500 cubic meter Jet A1 storage tank at the airport facility.

 

The formalization of these conventions took place on the sidelines of the 2026 Annual Assembly of African Airports and Airlines (AATCE), which was hosted in Lomé. These initiatives are integral to a broader governmental policy aimed at supporting the decarbonization of air transport while simultaneously improving the resilience of the sector’s energy infrastructure.

 

Through this strategic move, Togolese authorities are signaling their firm commitment to solidifying Lomé’s standing as a prominent regional aviation hub. The adoption of sustainable aviation fuel directly addresses the growing imperative for reduced carbon emissions within the aeronautical industry. Airlines and airport platforms globally face increasing pressure to incorporate cleaner energy solutions into their operations.

 

The proposed construction of the new Jet A1 storage facility is expected to significantly enhance the security of fuel supply for aircraft operating from the Togolese capital. This development will also be crucial in accommodating the anticipated rise in air traffic across the sub-region, further cementing Lomé’s logistical capabilities.

 

This progressive trajectory aligns seamlessly with the vision championed by President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, who has identified infrastructure modernization and energy transition as fundamental pillars of national development. Both the Minister of Transport and the Minister of Energy and Mines have publicly endorsed this initiative, reaffirming the government’s unwavering dedication to fostering an air transport system that is more sustainable, robust, and effectively integrated into major regional and international networks.
